Verdict

PDF.coPDF.co is useful if you need a bunch of PDF operations (merge, split, convert, annotate) and don't want to build them yourself. OCR is included but it's not competitive with dedicated OCR services for anything serious. At $0.02/call it's cheap enough to try. Docs and support are inconsistent. Think of it as a utility API for PDF tasks, not an OCR solution.

Best for: Developers who need basic OCR alongside other PDF operations in one API
Not for: Production document processing where OCR accuracy matters
💰Starting at: $0.02/call

PDF.co is a grab-bag of PDF APIs: OCR, conversion, merging, splitting, annotation. Jack of all trades, master of none. $0.02/call pricing.

We tested PDF.co against our standard set: 50 invoices, 20 receipts, 10 bills of lading, and 10 bank statements. The mix includes clean digital PDFs, rough scans, and phone photos.

Cons

  • OCR accuracy is noticeably worse than Google Document AI or ABBYY
  • Documentation and support quality are inconsistent
  • Not good enough for production document processing
